Why Slovenian Wine?

UNDISCOVERED QUALITY

Slovenia won more Decanter World Wine Awards in 2022, per litre produced, than their French or Italian cousins. Made in low volumes, and with only 10% exported, these are desirable wines.

SUSTAINABILTY

Small vineyards, artisan production methods, biodynamic and organic certification all make Slovenian vineyards some of the most sustainable in Europe.

VARIETY

Slovenia is small but mighty. From Alpine mountains to Adriatic coast, great plains to rolling Tuscan-style hills. You prefer fine wines? natural? orange? red? white? With 52 grape varieties we've got you covered.

FAQ

I've never heard of Slovenian wine, is it really any good?

Yes. Don't take our word for it, look at Decanter magazine, Master of Wine Caroline Gilby, former wine writer of the year Jancis Robinson, and orange wine expert Simon Woolfe for their opinions.

The wines seem expensive?

There's two answers to this. The first is, yes, they are not cheap. The second is more involved. In our food system everything has a cost, whether you as a consumer pay it or whether it's a cost to the quality of the product, land, or farmer. All the winemakers EmonaVina works with are small family run businesses. Our largest winemakers make around 125,000 bottles a year. This is tiny in comparison to global bohemoths such as Hardy's who made 112,800,000 bottles of Australian wine in 2014. The practices involved are artisan. Hand harvesting, trimming, organic and biodynamic farming let alone the cellar work. The focus is on sustainability, the land and the future as well as the product. This means the value of the wine for the quality and effort that goes into it is fair. But, these wines will never be £7 supermarket fodder, there's not getting away from the fact if that's what you want, this isn't for you. The final point to add to this is Brexit. Sorry, but it's made everything more expensive. That's juts a fact.

Why is shipping so much?

Wine is a specialist product - and it's heavy. It needs to stored and transported in specialist conditions. We work with the UK's leading bonded warehouse, London City Bond, who handle 8 million cases of wine in the UK per year. They have a specialist fleet of 300 vehicles delivering next day (max 48 hours) around the UK. Most traditional couriers won't touch liquids even if we wanted them to, but we've all seen enough clips online of how they treat our orders to know this would never be an option.

What is natural wine, vs organic and biodynamic?

This is a long subject and one we will post about on our social channels but in short. Natural is a philosophy typified by the absence of chemical fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides in the vineyards, spontaneous fermentation (no added yeasts) and maceration in the vinification. A lot of wine makers will use traditional clay amphora to ferment the wines. The challenge of natural is its unpredictability, not just year to year but bottle to bottle, and also it's lack of policing. It's not a monitored or assessed process. Both of these issues can lead to questionable products in the hands of less able winemakers. For us we have had, and supply, some wonderful natural wines, often giving different signals to nose and palette which is fun. We have also had wine that should never have been given to drink. It is a trend, but disregard traditional French style winemakers at your peril, as the complexity in these wines will always be something to enjoy.

Do you only ship to the UK?

For now yes, however if you are in the EU and have a volume based order you would be interested in making reach out and we can arrange that, note that EU prices will be LESS than those in the UK because of the shipping, import fees and VAT applicable to the wines coming into the UK.
